Apua, I need a locksmith! Ejem... Wait, not anymore, I guess ;P

For those of you that may not speak finnish (quite improbable, as finnish is spoken almost everywhere), "apua" means "help".

But... What happened for having this need? Fortunately, nothing to do with my lock this time, but with someone's else: My flatmate. Here is the story: For the last week, two friends were visiting him. Everything went fine, with a lot of fun moments and almost no disgraces. Until the very last moment. For better understanding, please let me explain this using a log format:

Expected event line. April 1, 2006:
  • Waking up
  • Eating
  • Packing
  • Check-in@harbour (16:30 as late)
  • Nightboat to Stockholm
  • Plane to London

What happened:

[~12:00] This people starts to wake up, giant queue for the shower (Eight people + one shower = stinky and almost eternal queue)
[12:00] Comments heard:
-We should prepare some food for luch and for the boat
-Good idea, what do we have for cooking
-Err.... Some rice, but nothing else...
-Ok, someone has to go to buy some food
[12:45] Someone actually goes to buy some food, while a cook stays at home preparing the rice.
[13:30] Food arrives
[14:00] Lunch is ready
-Eating gap-
[15:45] Flatmate realizes that his door is locked and his keys, inside the room.
[15:46] Slight panic
[15:47] I'm asked for the number of the company that very gently opens your door if you pay an amount within six and forty euros.
[15:48] Calling, nobody picks-up the phone. Friends try to relax playing PlayStation.
[15:49] Still, nobody is picking up.
[15:50] Still, nobody is picking up.
[15:51] Still, nobody is picking up.
[15:52] Still, nobody is picking up. Slight panic.
[15:55] Company contacted, they'll reach the place in twenty minutes. Fee: twenty euros.
[15:56] Panic decreases.
[15:58] Friend scores a superb goal with Barcelona. Germain (Olympique), a bit sad.
[16:02] Without waiting, someone tries to open the door.

Used tools:
  • Spanish ID card
  • Map of Åland islands
  • Screwdriver
  • Yellow "Danger, ice falling" warning sign, stolen@Stockholm
  • Non-correspondant keys
Obtained results:
  • Slight panic increase
  • Still closed, damaged door
[16:13] Someone rings the bell, general joy.
[16:14] People calms down, it's Marlene.
[16:21] Someone rings the bell, general joy.
[16:22] People calms down, it's Alex.
[16:26] Key guy is not coming, someone proposes knocking down the door. Proposal not considered at all.
[16:32] Official policy changed: Huge neighbour is asked by owner to knock down the door.
[16:33] Huge neighbour hits the door with the shoulder
[16:36] Someone starts to check possible flights to London from Tuku, Riga and Tallin. None of them are cheap/avaliable.
[16:41] Not a very slight panic increase.
[16:45] Someone calls to the harbour to inform that these two passengers will be late, but will try to arrive ASAP.
[16:47] Someone looks his watch. Huge panic increase.
[16:50] Friends take a taxi without their luggage. They will try to do the check-in, hoping that door will be opened and someone will bring the luggage and all the tickets before the boat departure.
[16:57] Huge neighbour keeps hitting the door with the shoulder
[16:59] Huge neighbour kicks the door.
[17:02] Huge neighbour returns to hitting-the-door-with-the-shoulder technique
[17:05] Door knocked down, lock destroyed. Two people take a taxi with all the luggage heading the harbour.
[17:11] Key guy appears
-Hi!, is it here where a key is needed?
-Yes, but the guy that called you had to leave. He had something to get from his room, but the boat was more important. He will call you next week, when he's back from Sweden. Thank you anyway (Dirty lier!!!)
-Ah! I see... OK! Bye!
[17:13] Tranquillity comes back to my place.

As amazing as it looks like ;P That's bad luck! the lock, as the log says, was totally destroyed. The door was not in perfect condition either.

I guess I have to thank these kind of things. If it wasn't for them, life would be soooo boring!

See u!

PS: Yeah, they reached the boat with (almost) all their luggage.

    That's a funny story :)
I guess that now you know why every finnish student have their keys around their neck ;)
Maybe you did not notice it, but there is a mecanism included into the lock, so that when you close the door it doesn't lock automatically.
I do not remember exactly how it works, however I'm sure that you'll found out!

An erasmus student in Helsinki last year.
